The Joy of Giving : Schools (2018-2019)

The Joy of Giving : Schools (2018-2019)

Daan Utsav, India’s festival of giving, also known as the Joy of Giving week, is celebrated every year from October 2-8. In 2017, over 60 lakh people across 200 cities participated in this event; this included over 1,000 companies, 1,000 NGOS and 1,100 events organised across the nation.

We believe that enabling the spirit of giving in children will make them socially conscious and take them a step closer to becoming better individuals. In an effort towards this, children from Bhumi’s School Transformation programme were also encouraged to participate in acts of giving throughout the week.

A total of 11 events took place between October 2-8, 2018. With the support of 2,097 generous givers and the support of our volunteers who put in a total of 435 volunteer hours, we were able to reach a total of 492 peopleWe are humbled and pleased to share a some of the events that took place.

Expressing Gratitude

School: Avvai Home Primary School, Adyar | Date: October 3, 2018

73 children from the school were given a small card to thank anyone, but for a specific reason. This got the children to not only connect with an individual but also make them think and articulate what they were thankful for.

One of the students wrote to her teacher: “நன்றி அம்மா” (Thank you, Mom!) and shared, “my mother has left the world, but you take care of me like my mother used to do”. The deeply touched teacher couldn’t help but well up.

Stationery collection and donation to the orphanage

Schools: Sri RKM Sarada Model Primary School, T-Nagar (October 8, 2018)

General Cariappa Higher Secondary School, Saligrammam (October 13, 2018)

Serva Sev Vidyalaya Matriculation School, Kunnavakkam (October 13, 2018)

Boxes of joy and good health were delivered at Kaakum Karangal, Sree Seva Mandir (Virugambakkam) and Karunalaya Karunai Illam and Irular Kudiyirupu (Vendivakkam) by children and teachers of the above schools respectively. This act of donating stationery and provisions is certainly an effort towards creating stronger communities.

This wasn’t all! Some of the other events that took place were vegetable and toiletry collection and donation to orphanages, rice collection and donation to an old age home, a police station visit to thank the policemen for their service, gratitude to community cleaners and a parents’ sports meet.

Bhumi is extremely grateful to the school management for allowing us to celebrate Daan Utsav – the joy of giving with the children. We are also thankful to the Headmistresses and teachers who put in a lot of time and effort in ideating and facilitating the activities.

With your support, we believe we will continue to celebrate Daan Utsav in the coming years too.
