Project in Bhumi: Little Einsteins, Science
Volunteering period: 2014 onwards
Tell us a little about yourself!
I have been volunteering with Bhumi for almost 4 years. I love to play cricket and am a good cook too. I work with Deloitte and in my leisure time, I spend time with my fellow Bhumians in Mumbai. Ardent fan of superhero & fantasy movies. Love to collect all action figures and I have a good collection of them.
How did volunteering with Bhumi happen?
I was volunteering with other NGOs before joining Bhumi. I wanted to do something different apart from the routine IT job. I have been with Bhumi for almost 4 years now. I started as a Kanini (Computer education programme) volunteer and soon took up responsibility of a City Coordinator and continued with the role for 3 years. Currently I am in National Support Team for Science.
What change did these experiences bring in your life? How has Bhumi altered you, personally?
I am glad Bhumi happened in my life; it has given me friends for life. In addition, the love of kids has been priceless. I feel happy that I have been able to do something for the society.
One most memorable incident in your life as a Bhumian:
There are many. One of the memorable incidents would be when my proposal to Deloitte for partnering with Bhumi Mumbai was accepted. It meant a lot. This led to Impact Day being held at centers of Bhumi Mumbai. During Impact Day, 200 volunteers impacted lives of circa 350 kids by doing various activities like painting their dorms, playing games, teaching them pot designing, making bookmarks, face painting, etc and providing gifts.
Tell us about one Bhumian, who has been an inspiration
There are 3-4 folks, but if I have to take one name, it has to be Yuva from Hyderabad. She is the powerhouse of Bhumi, always open to ideas and has a lot of energy and is supportive. The way she has started her own little NGO speaks volumes of her ability. She has been an inspiration for many.
Any specific, special moment with kids or volunteers, you would like to share with us?
Every single day with volunteers or kids is a moment in itself. I love being in the company of all the kids & volunteers. I forget my worries when with them all. One loving incident was when a kid came up and told “Bhaiya (meaning ‘brother’), I want to be like you”.
A message to every volunteer at Bhumi:
Volunteer to make an impact and bring in a change. Making an impact even in any one child’s life will be an achievement. Together we can bring a wave of change. Be patient and carry on the good work you are doing. You all are amazing and talented bunch of youngsters. Lead from the front and let us achieve Bhumi’s mission together.
