Volunteer Den – Supraja Suresh

Tell us a little about yourself!

I am a Software Engineer by Profession, known by many names … chatterbox, amplifier and so forth.. for evident reasons Born and brought up in Chennai, I hold a B.Tech degree (something which I din’t aspire for). I generally wanted to be a Dancer, but in vain. I had been grumbling about our general public for different purposes behind not being so supportive to Girls (at least, in our previous generation). One fine day some enlightenment thumped me on my head and that let me know.. “Quit Complaining and Start Acting”, which is the point when I chose to join some like-minded individuals, occupied with working towards bringing that long-anticipated change in the society.

How did volunteering with Bhumi happen? (including beginning, which project you volunteered for)?

Bhumi is like a dream-come-true for me, thanks to Preethi (my friend, who was volunteering with Bhumi) to have introduced me to this Paradise!

What change did these experiences bring in your life? How has Bhumi altered you, personally?

Bhumi is one of the greatest things happened to me in my life. My life can be cleanly divided into two parts before Bhumi and after Bhumi. If an organization can mould a person in such a way that someone who once was playful and careless has now become a responsible, calm and patient person, no wonders it can bring about a change in each and everyone’s life. Bhumi is indeed a blessing in disguise. I haven’t experienced the joy of giving until I joined Bhumi. After Bhumi, I have become a responsible person not only to the society, but also to my home. Every time I step out after finishing a Bhumi class, my heart fills with pride and peace. A million thanks to Bhumi for making me what I am now.

One most memorable incident in your life as a Bhumian:

Each and every minute I spent with bhumi is a treasure for me. It has taught me to make the best use of my time to give something back to the society. There is not just one, but many memorable incidents. Listing a few of them .. The moment I was awarded as the ‘Changemaker of the Year’, Nakshatra (all editions), Kanini pre- assessment test, when I got to know the personal life of every kid in my class.

Tell us about one Bhumian, who has been an inspiration

Again, there is not just one. Each Bhumian that I have come across, has inspired me in one way or the other. To me, the two most inspiring people are Lokesh and Mallieshwar (they are the ones whom I have closely worked with). Both of them are unique in their own style of working. Malli is the first person who invested his entire trust in me with Syllabus and guided me from time-tio-time during my initial days with Bhumi. Lokesh Anna (this is how I call him), has been my all-time guide-cum-mentor in everything I do. He doesn’t confine himself to one thing. He tries to give his best in anything he is upto.

Any specific, special moment with kids or volunteers you would like to share with us?

The most cherished memory is when a kid from my class gave me some good health tips when I went to my class after missing the previous class due to illness.

A message to every volunteer at Bhumi:

Feel proud of yourself!  You made the right choice and have landed in the best place ever. Though I was actively involved in all Bhumi activities in the past, I have gradually lost my pace now, due to various reasons, for which I really regret. Give your best, give everything you can. Bhumi has many people out there, to help you out in anything. Make the best use of this platform to contribute to the society. There cannot be any better opportunity.
