Transformational Education in Slum Communities of Chennai
Children growing up in slums experience a childhood with massive social problems associated with urban poverty. For most slum families, educating their children is the last thought on their minds. Every child up to the age of 14 is entitled to free schooling, but the government schools they attend are poorly resourced and have low learning outcomes.
Bhumi centres work with children in classes 3 – 8, to address this gap by inducting them into the classes and assess their current skill level in Tamil, English and Mathematics. The skills that align to classes 1 – 3 are categorized as lower primary level, those that align to classes 4 & 5 are upper primary level and those aligned to classes 6 – 8 are middle school level. The mastery of these skills at the appropriate grade level will help the children learn the progressively higher skills they are exposed to at school.
Children benefiting from this educational programme are assessed through a baseline test at the beginning of the year and another assessment at the end of the year. The children have made significant improvements in closing this educational gap.
It was observed that in Tamil, the average student progressed from 22% at the beginning of the year (baseline) to 30% in the end year assessments across grades 3 to 8 in various skills such as letters, words, sentences, story reading & comprehension and writing.
In Mathematics, the overall average progress in various skills was between 22-37% from baseline to the end of the year.
Bhumi’s learning centres provide the kids with the opportunity to learn, grow and discover their talents and aim to create an impact that leave the children of today transforming into change agents of their own community in the future.
