29 Jan Sarada Vidyalaya Model Primary School Parents Sports Meet 2020
The best predictor of student success is the extent to which families encourage learning at home and involve themselves in their child’s education. In low-income schools, where parents usually struggle to make a living and provide quality education to their children, this can be challenging. To engage parents in such situations, out of the box ideas like a special sports meet only for them proves to be a turning point.
At the onset of this new year our team from the School transformation program that works in low-income schools of Chennai, organized one such sport meet in Sarada Vidyalaya Model Primary School. The children were particularly excited about this & each one of them personally invited their parents. The idea of watching their parents and siblings compete in different games was a big boost to their positive spirits. They were all set to cheer for their moms & dads!
Panneerselvam, the father of Vanchinathan studying in class five, remarked fervently, that it was like reliving his school days. He shared that this was the first event he ever participated in after he passed out from his school. Just like him, we could see all other parents being childlike and participating enthusiastically in all the games.
The students were overwhelmed to see their parents in such a joyous mood!
Students aren’t the only ones who benefit from such family engagement, teachers do too. This kind of interaction between teachers & parents in a lighter mood helps them to build trust within themselves. Knowing more about a student’s family life can also help teachers prepare lessons that better fit that student’s needs.
