Storytelling: to a place far and new

Storytelling: to a place far and new

Most of us have grown up on stories narrated to us by our grandparents, parents and other elders in the family. They were the good old days when we would lie beside our grannies as they took us on fantasy journeys with their tales

Stories have the power to take children to far & new places, introduce them to some extraordinary people and eye-opening situations and in turn expand and enrich their world.

In one of our recent life skill sessions, we initiated a  drawing activity for all the children. They had to create their own designs & characters and build a story around it, which then they had to narrate it to everyone.

Through this kind of storytelling, we aimed at encouraging listening skills while inspiring curiosity.  This session helped to kindle imagination in these young minds, children developed better concentration when they were focusing on creating their own stories. Story writing and narration helped to enhance their vocabulary. This whole session led to increased emotional intelligence for all the children by building more empathy and thoughtfulness in them.

Drawing and creating their own characters and designs helped the children to think creatively. It was a big boost to their hand-eye coordination and pushed them to conceptualize new ideas. We also indulged in some logo designing with children post this session where they designed their own equivalents of Iron man & Superman logos.

All in all, it was a joyous learning experience both for the children and the volunteers.
