10 Aug Think Green. Start Young.
Bhumi’s EcoChamps was born when a group of greenheads joined hands to warm hearts and cool the planet. With its successful attempt at shaping environmentally conscious and responsible young citizens by engaging with more than 2,700 students in 14 schools, the culmination of season 1 handed down the torch to season 2 on 6th July 2019.
School children, teachers, parents, and Bhumi volunteers came together to celebrate the occasion by acknowledging each other’s efforts and learnings during EcoChamps’ Awards Ceremony organised in Youth Hostel, Adyar.
MCC Campus Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tambaram led the season with its outstanding performance. As part of Waste Fest, the students built a duck house to provide shelter to the birds in their school. Montfort Matric Higher Secondary School, St Thomas Mount won the Runners up trophy while ECI Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Olcott Memorial Higher Secondary School, and Government Higher Secondary School, Asthinapuram won the Achievers’ Awards. The schools were honoured by Dr. Prahalathan, mentor/Co-Founder of Bhumi.
Keeping in theme with the objective of the Program, efforts were made to keep the ceremony eco- friendly for which old newspapers instead of flex were reused for stage backdrop, and fruit salads and lemon juice were served in rented steel utensils instead of disposable ones. Moreover, all invitations and registrations were made through Google forms to discourage excessive paper printing. Lastly, bamboo toothbrushes were distributed amongst the winners of the quiz competitions to motivate everyone to make similar switches to eco-friendly lifestyle products.
Season 2 of Eco-Champs has kick-started from August with theme-based activities planned for the next 6 months. We invite you to join us in our collective cause. To volunteer: https://www.bhumi.ngo/eco-champs-volunteer/
