Volunteer Den – Deeksha Uchil

Tell us a little about yourself!

A SAP Technical consultant by profession and soft spoken person by nature. I love minions, listening to songs and hanging out with friends.

How did volunteering with Bhumi happen? (Including beginning, which project you volunteered for)

My journey with Bhumi started in 2014. Like most of the people, I too was free on weekends and decided to do something new and challenging. I found Bhumi via social media and the journey continues from there.

Initially I volunteered with Kanini (Computers) module and later on moved to LES (Science) module in Mumbai. Presently I serve as Ignite’s Project Coordinator for Mumbai city.

What change did these experiences bring in your life? How has Bhumi altered you, personally?

I changed from a complete introvert to extrovert. Bhumi gave me that determination to face things (used to travel almost 1hr) to classes and have learnt a lot on how to handle situations and developed people skills.

One most memorable incident in your life as a Bhumian:

On Teacher’s day, all the children made beautiful cards wishing the volunteers a happy teachers day. This memory, in which children beautifully expressed their accumulated love, is what drives me still, filling me with passion and energy to continue this drive.

Tell us about one Bhumian, who has been an inspiration

Lijo Raj, our previous city coordinator for Mumbai has always pushed me to do better. He is one of the main reasons for the change that I went through as a coordinator. He will always serve as my inspiration.

Any specific, special moment with kids or volunteers you would like to share with us?

Nakshatra Mumbai – after 3 years, it happened for first time in Mumbai wherein more than 100 volunteers participated. I was the volunteer head. About 80% volunteers where new to Bhumi. Nonetheless the event turned out to be great success as the children were very happy and the hard work was worth it.

A message to every volunteer at Bhumi:

It is great to see everybody being so enthusiastic and it will be great if volunteers continue to serve for long years. It not only benefits you but also the society. I am not saying that it will be easy, but the journey will be worth it.
