Volunteer Den – Jaffer Jamaludeen

Jamal has been volunteering with Bhumi since 2014 under PR and Communications, in Chennai. He has been a part of as many as 10 campaigns.

Tell us a little about yourself!

I’m a freelancing Graphic / Web Designer. My major interests are designing, programming and sports.

How did volunteering with Bhumi happen?

It all started when I was 16. I was working with a lot of NGO’s in Chennai. After 6 months into volunteering, I realized that all my weekends were completely occupied with events and I was unable to practice for my sports events. At that time, I got an opportunity to volunteer for sports with Bhumi. I was elated because I got the specifications of volunteering as well as time to spend for sports. I ended up volunteering with the Sports team for two years.

Share your experience in the event that you have been actively participating in.

Majic collar – Animal welfare activity: This is one of my most favourite activities. We go to beaches and localities and tag stray dogs with collars. I have personally coordinated three events where up to 60 dogs have been tagged.

What change did these experiences bring in your life? How has Bhumi altered you, personally?

I did not have any big ambition in my life, but I do now.

Bhumi has served as a platform for me to educate myself and support the society at the same time. Bhumi has made me what I am today – whether it is in the area of designing, speaking, coordinating events and people, or even my leadership skills – I learnt all there is to learn through my days in Bhumi.

Tell us about one Bhumian, who has been an inspiration:

I met a volunteer named Rasika in Kanini, Chennai around a year back. A highly motivated volunteer, she helped us in putting together the Chennai PR team. When no one believed it was possible to create and maintain a PR team in a city consistently, she and her team got that done successfully. Till date, that team (Adil, Subhash and Rasika) serves as an example to new city teams that we initiate today.

Any specific, special moment with kids or volunteers you would like to share with us?

Every moment in Bhumi is special. If I had to mention one, it would be the day I got the opportunity to be the MC at the event ‘Nakshatra’. I had an amazing time interacting with more than 1000 kids in just one day.

A message to every volunteer at Bhumi:

Bhumi is one of the few organizations which provides volunteers with the space to learn, lead and thrive. So, use this opportunity to learn as much as possible.
