11 Nov Volunteer Den: Sharanya Bharath
At Bhumi, we realise that our volunteers are our strongest ambassadors. Their undying love for their volunteering experience brings them back to us every time they want to give back to the community. These engagements help us become stronger and spread the word about our work far & beyond.
Here is one such story of Sharanya Bharath – although miles away in Copenhagen, she had some time in hand and wanted to support our Ignite – Schools team.
About her: Sharanya was faculty at the APL global school teaching Global Studies from grade 3-7. She also taught History for grades 6 & 7. Due to her exceptional abilities, she was promoted to being a coordinator from teacher before completing a year of service! As a coordinator, her role was to ideate and execute better class plans with fellow teachers, observe classes, build a good team overall within the dept. All this was in addition to teaching. She also taught music to children in grades 6-8 at the Kottur High School.
After a preliminary discussion between her and Lokeshwaran (Manager, Ignite – Schools), it was decided that she will conduct a few online sessions for our school facilitators on Pedagogy, Classroom Management, and Teacher interaction. Sharanya shares her experience with us after the first session.
“Thank you for allowing me to conduct this session with the school team. It was such an enjoyable experience for me to connect with them. Initially, when Lokesh and I connected we discussed the challenges faced by his team of facilitators and how we could address them. We decided to have a workshop to start with, as it will give both the facilitators and me a good chance to interact. Lokesh was quick enough to schedule a session on Pedagogy, Classroom Management, and Teacher interaction.
The session was scheduled for an hour, but we extended it by an additional half-hour to keep the discussion going. The energetic team of facilitators had a lot of reflection and initiated healthy discussions throughout the session. There were so much learning and takeaways in that 1.5 hours for each of us who attended the session.
Going forward, I expect to see each facilitator’s takeaway being implemented with their team of teachers. It will be good to know what worked and what didn’t work with each team. When it comes to teaching and handling teachers, there is no right or wrong way. But constant reflection will help us understand the outcomes better. I also would love to collaborate with Bhumi’s Ignite – Schools program in any way possible and help in achieving the organisation’s goal in building better teachers and leaders of tomorrow! Thank you, team Bhumi for this opportunity!”
Thank you Sharanya for thinking about us when you wanted to give back. We look forward to your continued association with the team, for we are certain it would be a step to building stronger teachers for our schools.
Bhumi’s School Transformation Programme supports low-income schools on their journey to becoming exemplary schools in their communities. Currently ongoing in 15 schools across Chennai, and supported by corporates like Qualcomm, FLEX, Greenergy, SEW Eurodrive, the programme also focuses on building the capacities of the teachers for improved content delivery.
