13 Jul Volunteer Den – Subitcha V
Subitcha Venkatesh is currently pursuing B.E (II year) at K. Ramakrishnan College of Engineering. She is an artist and a classical dancer.
My Journey with Bhumi
I started volunteering for Daan Utsav when I was in grade 10. I also helped in raising funds through smile tickets for Nakshatra, Bhumi’s annual talent festival. After completing grade 12, I started volunteering every weekend with Lakshya, the mentoring/life skills programme. Within six months, I applied to Lead Bhumi and I was selected to coordinate HR works in the city. I have also been a part of the Right to Education awareness campaigns, social media team, and other events like Nakshatra and Daan Utsav. In short Bhumi is all my teen life.
Volunteering in Bhumi has improved my leadership skills, made me socially responsible and has helped me tackle any challenging situation with utmost maturity and calmness.
Moment to Cherish
I used to visit colleges for recruiting volunteers. On one such occasion, a staff from a college, who happened be a good friend of my college’s Head of the Department, appreciated my work at Bhumi. Hearing this, my HoD not just appreciated me in front of all year I students but also helped in raising funds and allowed me to recruit volunteers from my college.
Receiving the 100% volunteer Award and Bhumi Earth Award has been really encouraging and are moments to cherish.
Incident that changed my outlook
When I volunteered at a Daan Utsav event during my class 10 days, a child named Ashok with so much joy held my hands tightly and said, “Akka, when will u come back to meet us?” It was this incident that made me join Bhumi.
I just want to shout-out to my senior volunteers for their endearing support. When I joined Bhumi, I was the youngest volunteer and was fondly called papa (kid). But they guided me in all ways possible and it’s because of Bhumi, I’ve got a wonderful family of Annas and Akkas who would stand for me in all hardships even in both Bhumi and my personal life.
