27 Nov Volunteer Den – Suren Mohanty
A little about yourself (origin, education, past work experiences)
I am Suren Mohanty, 23, born and brought up in Rourkela, Odisha. I completed my schooling from Saint pauls’ School, Rourkela. Post my schooling I joined KIIT Science College, Bhubaneswar for my 10+2 (Computer Science) and then I pursued my B-tech (Mechanical) from Gandhi institute of Engineering and Technology, Gunupur. Currently I am working for Tata Autocomp Ltd., in the field of automotive product engineering as a Design Engineer. Prior to this job I was working as an intern in the same company during my final year in the college. I am very proud to be one of the core team who started National Service Scheme activities in our college and we were awarded many times for contributing towards the society. Our college is the only college where blood donation drive is conducted every month which was also an initiative of National Service Scheme team.
How did volunteering with Bhumi happen (including beginning, which project you volunteered for)?
It was the month of February, when I had just completed 2 months of my internship and was still continuing my B-tech in 7th Semester when I searched for NGO’s in Pune and found Bhumi and registered there. And after some days after the orientation I was mapped to LEM project at Eklavya Ashram.
What change did these experiences bring in your life? How has Bhumi altered you, personally?Bhumi is an organization which makes you realize your positive points and helps you to eradicate your negative points. Bhumi gives a huge platform for all the volunteers to enhance one’s leadership skills, and I have maximized my leadership skill working as a team. I was very short-tempered during my college days and my friends feared to talk to me. After joining Bhumi, I feel I have transformed into a better human being. My friends and my colleagues consider me a very humble and humorous guy. After 2 months of joining Bhumi, I had to go to Odisha to appear for my final semester exam and believe me some classes I took for the kids helped me to focus more on studies during my exams and I completed my B-tech successfully.
Most memorable incident in your life as a Bhumian
There are so many memorable events while volunteering with Bhumi, but the 3 days event (Beacon) that I attended in Chennai was the most memorable one. During Beacon inside that resort made me feel that I am in a different world and enjoyed every bit of it. The energy that I gained through that event is still flowing in me.
Tell us about one Bhumian, who you think is a very good inspiration for you
I would not specify any name because when I see people individually they don’t inspire me at all but when I see a team working for a single cause it inspires me a lot because when we work in a team we work with each other and when we work alone we work against each other. Bhumi as a whole team inspired me a lot and helped me taking new challenges
Any specific, special moment with kids or volunteers you would like to share with us?
3 months back when we went for our first class in Maher homes which is 35km in the outskirts of pune, Sister Jenny took us to the central hall and made us stand in front of all the kids. Suddenly all the kids welcomed us with a song and it created Goose bumps in my whole body. I closed my eyes because tears were about to roll out of my eyes. Suddenly all the kids came running towards us and hugged us. There I couldn’t resist my tears coming out from my eyes and I still remember that day because of the energy given by the kids that day, the volunteers are travelling around 35 km to take classes for the kids.
A message to every volunteer at Bhumi
Excuses, Explanation, Ego—these 3Es are instrumental for success as well as for failure. If we avoid these 3Es. We will succeed; if we acquire them, we are doomed to fail, after joining Bhumi most of us have realized that these. 3 Es are slowly moving away from our life. Let us now help all our friends with the same. Let us pledge to refer one friend to Bhumi
Happy Volunteering with Bhumi
